DHS Swim Team's extraordinary 2022 season

Updated: Oct 21, 2022

With swim season coming to an end, we look back on the incredible season the swim team had.

To begin, the team had plenty of new faces with over half the team being new to the team. High expectations turned over from last year’s season with the boys going undefeated and the girls only losing one meet to rivals FPC.

To start out the season we went against Matanzas High School where we exceeded expectations. The girls won 136-51 and the boys 137-31, including a bunch of personal bests for many swimmers.

The second meet was a big matchup against Father Lopez, who DeLand has gone back and forth with for years. Sadly, the meet was postponed due to bad weather, but they got in enough events to declare a team win with both boys and girls. It resulted in the boys winning 58-20 and the girls 43-20.

Over the next couple of meets going against Flagler Palm Coast, a tri-meet against Mainland and University, the Bulldogs destroyed the competition winning outright in both meets.

Next up was the Record Breaker meet where they faced off against nine other schools, consisting of Dr. Phillips, Spruce Creek, Olympia, Titusville, Brevard, Paxon, Father Lopez, Calvary Chapel and University. The team was outstanding on the day, winning over 900 points, 300+ of second place.

A huge highlight from the meet was the boys Medley 200 relay consisted of Maverick Mules, Maddox Mules, Ryker Mules, and Carlos Mize, beating the record they had set last year by four seconds

Afterwards, the Bulldogs went against Spruce Creek who’s been a swimming powerhouse for years. However, after unbelievable performances by both the boys and girls, the Bulldogs won extending their undefeated streak heading into the most important meet yet, 5 Star.

The Bulldogs boys’ team had won their first ever 5 Star trophy last year and wanted to keep the trophy as well as claim the girls trophy as they were so close last year. The girls had never won but were confident this time they could win.

After a slow start, they picked up the pace and were proud of their performance. After scoring was complete not only did the boys repeat, but the girls also won too. For the first time ever both the boys and girls won 5 star and continued our dominant undefeated season.

To conclude, the team captains had a thing to say about their thought on the team. “This team is the most supportive team I have ever been on. And I am proud to be a captain of the DHS swim team. But it is more than a team, it’s a family. We help each other to be better physically and mentally.”
