Freshman First Impressions

DeLand High School freshmen were asked a few questions about their opinion of their high school experience, and how they are adjusting to a new high school life.

Most of the freshman have the idea of going to a bigger school, making friends, and just getting through to get out of high school. Other 9th grade students try to graduate early and finish all their credits and involve themselves in programs and school.

Every freshman also past year freshmen, are or were just trying to be cool, make friends trying to have everyone know them and everything about them.

Freshman Kierce Zinzi said the biggest difference between middle and high school was the amount of people she had to go through in the hallways. It was easy for her to adjust to waking up earlier because the last school she went to she woke up earlier. She said she would like to graduate early, finish all her credits and join dual enrollment.

As a freshman, the first thought is to get settled and get the feel of high school before doing anything drastic.

With some students they just go right into it and make sure they get everything they need to get whatever they want for their ‘easy’ junior and senior year, none of the four years of high school are easy, it just gets more stressful with the idea of getting closer to your dream goals and closer to ending school life.

Maria Mendoza said she got lost while trying to find her classes on her first day. Her favorite class is her medical skills class she said because she wants to be a doctor.

The first few days of high school for Mendoza were not as she expected. She thought it would be a lot more fun to experience. Her goals are getting good grades and have upper classes to earn all her credits before she graduates.

Most freshmen want to be something that includes a lot of school and time, some work for and some give up. Having good grades and all upper classes only gets you a quarter of the way to a dream, you must join clubs, do volunteer work or be excellent in academics to get a little more than halfway to what you want.

Just work hard for what you want and have an open mind to reality, everything could fall easily into place if you make it too.
