New Transfers in European Soccer

Updated: Oct 21, 2022

On June 10, the three-month summer transfer window began for European fútbol clubs, helping each club to either grow their team or earn money for the upcoming season.

The first window out of two in a season ended on September 1 at 11 p.m. During the pre-season transfer, there were many new additions to several clubs, which has really impacted players and the teams they have entered.

Across the English premier league, the 20 teams spent close to €2.24 billion during this transfer window. One of the most eye-catching moves was the forward, Earling Halland. At a price of €60 million, Halland now plays at Manchester City instead of Dortmund. The 21-year-old came into the team on July 1.

Since the season has begun, Halland has scored two hat tricks, bringing him to a total of nine goals already for the season. Coach Pep Guardiola explains that Halland will sooner than later start to destroy any previous records made by the former forward and legend, Sergio Agüero.

Another large transfer was the Real Madrid star, Casemiro moving to Manchester United to play under Erik ten Hag. The €70 million midfielder has played at his former team for close to 9 years. The Brazilian now has a chance to play in the Premier League, however, has not played on Old Trafford, since coming in late August.

As the FIFA World cup is also coming in November, players want to keep in mind the best way to stay field ready, and by doing so, having to move clubs as well. Sergino Dest is one of those players. U.S. men’s national team outside back Dest has played at FC Barcelona since 2020, but his welcome is coming to an end.

Coach Xavi didn’t want to have Dest at Camp Nou anymore. While he does have great versatility, the team is wanting to move in a different direction and Dest mutually agreed that if he wasn’t going to have a chance to play, he should move. AC Millan opted to pay €20 Million to sign Dest on a season-long loan.

Former Chelsea player Timo Werner has one of the most beneficial moves of the 2022-2023 season, now playing with RB Leipzig. Although Werner scored 23 goals and assisted 21 times in his 89 games, his chemistry with the Blues did not seem to match up. Returning to Leipzig to regenerate his career was his best option in the Bundesliga.

Players weren’t the only great decisions in the transfer windows, managerial changes were also greatly made and how they decided to form their team. One coach that impacted their team is Jesse Marsch at Leeds United.

Marsch’s choice to bring in Tyler Adams and Marc Roca for their skills and workload in the midfield was a great idea. Also, the replacement of well-known player, Raphinha with 21-year-old Brenden Aaronson shows the growth that Leeds is wanting to make in the upcoming season.

With the transfer window now closed, and the money spent, Chelsea leads the way of transfer activity under their new owner Todd Boehly. After signing many players such as Raheem Sterling from Manchester City, Marc Cucurella from Brighton and Kalidou Koulibaly, captain of Sengal’s national team Close to €275 million was spent by Chelsea alone in the 2022 summer transfer window.

As the transfer window has now closed, the newly-appointed teams are looking for a fresh start heading into their separate leagues in Europe. Most teams are now heading out of preseason and into the first games of the season. Many are hoping for great success in winning titles and trophies.
