We Got Spirit, Yes, We Do!

Updated: Oct 21, 2022

The climate of school culture differentiates across the nation. Students around campus are making an extra effort to cultivate a better school environment through promoting students to have school spirit and be involved.

Bailey Newcomb is President of the 2023 Senior class and runs an Instagram page called dhsdawgparty. On this page, she posts about the student section and upcoming games students can go to to show school spirit.

Newcomb states that her intentions with the page are to “promote the student section and student involvement.”

When asking Newcomb why school spirit is so important to her, she responded, “school spirit is a very important component to a positive school environment.” She also tells us how getting dressed up for spirit days and sports events not only makes school a more positive environment, but also makes it a more positive thing for students as it doesn’t only involve academics.

Junior, Sarah Gautney, is also a leader of the student section. Gautney runs a TikTok account that promotes a better school culture through different fun activities. Her main reason behind the account is to teach students who might not know the chants that are used at sporting events and school pep rallies.

When asked how much she enjoys being able to teach these students who want to get more involved, she responded: “I love it. It’s the best part of my week when I get to come to the football games and show my school spirit with my chants.”

In addition, Gautney said school spirit can improve school culture by getting students more involved, not only with the student section, but with sports and clubs. She believes that if there is variety with different themes, clubs and sporting events that the student section goes to, then it will make them more excited to be involved.

But why is school spirit important for a better school environment? According to the President of Missouri State University, “School spirit is important because it sets the tone for various aspects of the school and its students. When the student body is involved in events on and off campus, it demonstrates a passion for pride that is immeasurable and contagious.”

If a student wanted to get more involved with the school, because there are so many opportunities to join the student section, clubs and sports teams, they would have no problem doing so. This campus continues to make an effort to encourage students to go out of their comfort zone and be a part of the Bulldog community by getting involved.
