This summer, there are a couple of movies coming out. But the current box office offerings are leaving much to be desired, especially compared to the phenomenal movies released during last summer, like Barbie, Oppenheimer and Spider-Man Across the SpiderVerse.
Despicable Me 4 comes out this summer featuring the iconic Minions.
So why is that? Well, it could be due to the actors and writers strikes of last year, which we may finally be seeing the consequences of as they both started a little over a year ago now, and ended a little under eight months ago.
Movies take about one to two years to go through production and release, so it is understandable that we are now seeing the effects of the strikes from a year ago, with delays likely persisting into the next year.
However, not all is bad. There are plenty of movies that are coming out this summer that are sure to impress audiences. On the Marvel front, Deadpool and Wolverine comes out in July, which marks a new phase for both titular characters as neither have been on the screen in new content since 2016 and 2017, respectively. Neither have been on screen since Disney purchased 20th Century Fox in 2019, so it is possible they will show a different approach to these characters, especially now that the movies will be in Marvel Cinematic Universe canon.
In fact, this summer is almost exclusively good for existing franchises, as many are seeing new entries in their series. For example, the hit videogame series Borderlands is receiving a long-awaited adaptation for the big screen, along with a new Alien film in Alien: Romulus.
Despicable Me 4 also comes out in July, and it will probably be the movie, if any, to cause a social media storm as the last time a Minion-related movie came out it became a huge social media trend.
Furthermore, many classics are coming back to the theaters this summer, like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World which comes back on June 2 and 5 in select theaters, along with the iconic South Park film from 1999.
Several Studio Ghibli films are returning to theaters as part of their yearly “Ghibli-Fest” where their movies return to theaters. Notably, Princess Mononoke and Ponyo are returning in July and August respectively, among other hits surrounding those.
There are a number of movies that are in production and near release, like Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and the long-awaited Minecraft movie. Although, the whole year looks just as grim even with these upcoming highlights.
In all reality, the summer isn’t completely bleak. But when compared to last year, when the theaters consistently had multiple movies that felt like pop culture events, it’s unfortunately very unlikely that we will see any similar highs.
