Taylor Swift’s new album, The Tortured Poets Department, came out April 19, and it's safe to say it's one of her best yet. With the symbolism and imagery she uses, she creates this beautiful and deep album that gives you something new to think about with each listen.
There a variety of ways to listen to the new TSwift album.
While many people will go into the album trying to dissect every song and lyric to try to put a paternity test to each song, you shouldn't. These songs are more than who they were written about and Swift herself said that she doesn't like it when people do this. This album feels especially important to not do that because it feels like her own personal diary with how open she is.
In The Tortured Poets Department, Swift writes about the challenges of mental health while also having the eyes of millions on her. She writes about battling and healing from heartbreak and how much pressure she is under with the opinions of so many others debating how she should be living her life.
Going into the album on April 19, we didn't really know anything about it. We didn't know the sound or genre, we only knew a few lyrics and we had no idea the tricks Swift had under her sleeves for the night.
Now we know the genre is synth-pop and folk-pop and about the other 15 songs that came with The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology. If you didn't know, at 2 a.m. of the album release night, Swift announced the album was actually a double album. Throughout the week prior there had been many hints and easter eggs with the number two. Many fans were theorizing that this was pointing to a double album, and they were right.
Since the album has been out, there have been many conflicting thoughts on it. You either love the album or hate it. With this album you have to listen to it more than once. Because there are so many songs with this complex writing, it's hard to digest in one sitting. If you give it more than one chance, then you'll see just how beautiful and meaningful these lyrics are.
This album is unlike any of her others because she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. She wrote this album over the course of two years, and you can tell with some of the songs that she can look back on some of those times and realize what she was really going through at that moment. She has said that this album is so important to her because she felt like she had to write these songs to process her emotions.
This album has lots of new songs to call your favorites. Some of my favorites include, “Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?”, “Peter” and “So Long, London.” In each and every song you can tell that she put her heart in soul into it, which is what makes this album so special.
Swift is in the middle of her world tour, The Eras Tour. She planned this album to be released during one of her breaks during the tour. Because of this, many fans are wondering if this means she will be adding a The Tortured Poets Department set to her show.
It isn't known for sure if she will, but she has been hinting at her return to the tour, on May 9, and in one of her recent YouTube Shorts, there are clips of sets and props never seen before, so there is a good chance this is her hinting at this new set.
Whether the album is your type of music or not there is no denying how beautifully written and significant this album is. Everyone should try listening to the album to see this.
