Mixed Emotions About Leaving High School

Graduating high school leaves seniors with mixed emotions. All seniors go through the highs and the lows of leaving high school which causes mixed emotions.

Senior Awards night is exciting for graduating seniors.

Graduating high school is a huge accomplishment while it is also a huge change. Once you graduate, you are held to a higher standard when facing the real world.

When most students are graduating high school, they think about not having to go to school and just being able to do whatever they want. No one thinks about getting a job or what they are going to do in their lives just yet.

Each senior feels a different way about leaving high school. Some of those emotions include sadness, excitement, nervousness, anticipation. You can either feel one of these emotions or multiple, to all of them when graduating. The emotions that each senior is feeling now are completely diverse.

As graduation is approaching, seniors feel excited about not having to wake up early anymore or not having to go to classes they don’t like. They also feel nervous about their grades and graduation requirements, leaving school and having to go to college or getting a full-time job, maybe even nervous about walking the stage in front of everyone that will be there. The sadness would come from those who are sad to leave all the memories and friends and teachers behind when leaving high school.

When graduating high school, seniors need to make sure they have all of their graduation requirements checked off, any tests that are required for graduation passed and all of their classes passed. Seniors must expect the real world to be much harder than high school.

Professors in college will be much harder on you than high school teachers were. Jobs are going to be much harder to get and you will need to be more professional than you may be at the job you have now. Don’t just think about the hard times though, think about how hard you worked for this to be able to happen and think of how huge of an accomplishment you completed.

After graduation, most students already have their life planned for right now. They either are going straight to college or taking a gap year/semester before going to college. Some are even just working or have other things planned for after graduation.

I would say that the thing seniors are going to miss most about high school would be all of the memories they have made. Memories from freshman year to senior year such as football games, homecoming, the Growl, prom, assemblies, senior water wars. For me personally, the memories are what I am going to miss the most.

All the major events at the end of senior year such as prom, senior breakfast, senior clap out, baccalaureate and senior awards are needed not only for the memories but also for their own use.

Senior breakfast gives seniors one last chance to be with their classmates and friends one last time all together at school. Senior clap out is to provide seniors with the feeling of completing a huge accomplishment.

Baccalaureate is a ceremony held for seniors at the church where the pastor talks to the seniors with words of encouragement before graduating. Senior awards is a ceremony where seniors receive their honors cords and medallions for clubs and classes they took throughout high school.

Graduating high school is a bittersweet moment. You have worked hard to get to this point, but it is also hard to believe that you are growing up and no longer going to be in high school. While leaving high school is a positive moment, it is also a realization that this is it, once we leave, we are now held to a higher standard.
